Andy Flory, professor of music, has received funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities’ Summer Stipends opportunity and the American Philosophical Society’s Franklin Research Grant program in support of his next book project. Marvin Gaye: The Detroit Years charts the singer’s rise to fame with Motown Records during the formative decade of the 1960s. This groundbreaking study discusses Gaye’s creative history in detail for the first time, delving into his remarkable collaborations and performances, unorthodox songwriting techniques, and novel attempts at record making.
Funding from the NEH Summer Stipend will support Prof. Flory as he begins revising and editing his draft manuscript this summer, and support from the APS Franklin Research Grant will allow Prof. Flory to conduct photo research and procure high-quality scans of historical images.
